Known to some as the “Alpamayo Circuit”, the trek which follows the valley of Los Cedros is the least traveled and perhaps most divine walking trails in the Cordillera Blanca. The trek begins in the small town of Hualcayan, 12 or so kilometers beyond Cashapampa (the start of the popular Santa Cruz Trek). Each of the 10 days of the walk is characterized by a unique and spectacular sight, be it a dazzling alpine lake, a high and windy pass, the view of Alpamayo which won the peak the title “most beautiful mountain in the world,” a rural farm set deep in the valley below gigantic glaciated peaks, small communities all to happy to welcome you in for a cup of tea or a game of football (soccer)… The trail you’ll follow crosses over the Cordillera Blanca from east to west and then crosses back again where it joins with the popular Santa Cruz trail and exits at Cashapampa (just a short distance from where you started!). Plenty of options for side trips exist, and several rest days are planned in to ensure that the work of the walking is complemented by the satisfaction of just ‘being’ in an undeniably beautiful place.
