30 DAY BACKPACKING / MOUNTAINEERING COURSE |
A full month in the Andes, learning the skills of backcountry living, rock climbing, mountaineering, and outdoor leadership. Designed for those who want the skills to continue exploring the outdoors after the course. Course components include Backpacking Expedition, Rock Climbing Seminar, Mountaineering Skills Course, and Mountaineering Expedition including up to 2 summit experiences.

Below is a sample itinerary for the Skyline Adventure School 30 day backpacking / rock climbing / mountaineering course. While the course components are set, their particular order and/or location in the course is subject to change due to student needs, weather patterns, etc... We will do our best in all circumstances to cover the intended curriculum and provide authentic and educational outdoor experiences for our students.

This course is designed for individuals who are fit and motivated to learn and participate. Prior to the course students must be:

| * Solid hiking shoes / boots (crampon compatible unnecessary)
* 2-4 pairs of warm wool or synthetic socks (and liner socks according to preference) * Pair of comfortable camp shoes (running shoes/sneakers) * 1-2 pairs of thermal polypro (or equivalent) mid weight long underwear tops and bottoms * 1-2 T-shirts (1 synthetic recommended) * 1 light fleece top * 1 mid-weight fleece top and bottom * 1 pair of fleece pants * 1 down or synthetic jacket with hood * Gore-Tex or equivalent outer shell jacket and pants * 1 pair of nylon (quick-dry) hiking shorts * 1 pair trekking pants (nylon, quick-dry, can be type that converts into shorts) * 1 pair of Gore-Tex gaiters (heavy-duty, sized large enough to fit over plastic boots) * 1 pair of Gore-Tex shell gloves * 2 pair of removable fleece glove liners * 1 wool or fleece hat * 1 cap with visor * 1-2 sports bras/tanks (for women) * 2 water bottles or equivalent accessory (2 liter carrying capacity) * All toiletries * Headlamp and Batteries (bring at least 2 spare sets) * 1 pair of glacier compatible sunglasses (full coverage – ask salesperson if you are not sure) * Sunscreen (> SPF 45) * Stick of chap stick (> SPF 45) * Comfortable lightweight day pack * In town clothing * Sleeping bag (rating depends upon particular trip) * Expedition backpack (needed for some trips, consult with admissions person for details) OPTIONAL: * Trekking poles (recommended) * Thermarest sleeping pad * Crazy creek chair * Camera and film * Journal and pens * Spanish / English dictionary * Book to read and exchange in Huaraz NOTE: Clients will be supplied with all technical equipment for climbs, treks, and courses (unless other arrangements have been made with Skyline Adventures). This includes personal equipment (plastic boots, crampons, harness, helmet, and axes) as well as all necessary camping and kitchen gear. If you have any questions, please feel free to send us an email and we’ll be happy to help! There are very few equipment stores in Lima or Huaraz, and it is difficult and expensive to purchase items once in Peru. In terms of cultural sensitivity, try to dress modestly when in town and refrain from bringing/wearing expensive jewelry, watches, etc…

While communicating with out using words can be entertaining, gestures will only get you so far! Giving yourself a basic working knowledge of the Spanish language could be the difference between a good trip and a great one.
